Pre-Hospital and Transport Medicine Advanced Learning Program

Applications for admission July 2026 are now closed. Thank you to all who have submitted applications. Those selected will be contacted.

STARS offers a six to nine month Area of Advanced Learning Certificate program in Prehospital and Transport Medicine (PTM). Successful applicants will work alongside experienced pre-hospital clinicians with critical care transport of seriously ill and injured patients. STARS can respond directly to scene calls or aid in inter-facility care and transportation. Transports are primarily completed via helicopter, but trainees will be expected to attend airplane and ground transports where appropriate.

The trainees will gain valuable experience in managing logistics of transport in addition to providing consultant level advice to referring practitioners. The PTMALP is part of STARS’ renowned education program with weekly case teaching sessions and monthly simulation or procedure sessions. The trainees will also be involved in quality improvement, education, and / or research opportunities.

The STARS PTMALP leadership team is currently in the process of application to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for designation as a formal Area of Focused Competency (AFC).

  1. Where is the program based?

Historically the program has been based out of Calgary, Alberta, but is available in Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, or Winnipeg. Trainees will be expected to complete up to two months of training at other STARS bases to gain exposure to different prehospital environments.

  2. Who can apply?

Applications are accepted from senior residents in Royal College Critical Care specialties (Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, and ICU). The program is built to be compatible with the Royal College PGY‑5/Transition to Practice year, but exceptions can and have been made for applicants to complete the program after they have completed residency. Preference will be made to applicants who have shown a keen interest in pre-hospital medicine and a willingness to incorporate it as part of their career going forward.

  3. Available positions

Currently, there are 2 – 4 positions available annually.

Unfortunately, we do not accept international applicants at this time.
