Gift of Securities
A gift of securities allows you to donate investments such as stock, bonds, or mutual funds while receiving a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the gift. Your gift helps fund critical care, anywhere — and it may offer significant tax advantages.
Why give securities?
Gifts of securities are a powerful way to support STARS and the patients who rely on us for critical care. When you donate securities held longer than one year, you can help save lives while potentially reducing your tax burden.
How it works
You transfer securities
You instruct your broker to transfer securities to STARS.
We sell the securities
STARS sells the securities and applies to proceeds to support our mission.
You receive a tax receipt
You receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities on the date we receive them.
Tax benefits
When you donate securities, you can receive a charitable tax receipt for the full market value and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation.
We recommend that you speak with your tax advisor, accountant or financial planner before making a gift of securities.
Fair market value is the value of the securities transferred as determined at the end of the trading day on the day the securities are received.
How to donate securities
To ensure we can properly identify and acknowledge your gift, please follow these steps:
- Complete the Transfer of Securities Form with your broker. Send the completed form to both your broker and STARS.
- Instruct your broker or delivering custodian to initiate the transfer using the details in the form.
- A charitable tax receipt will be issued for the fair market value of the securities on the date we receive them.
