Hometown: Linden, AB
Deena Hill, her friend Valina and Valina’s sister Tracy were on their way home to Linden after a movie, dinner and art show in Red Deer in January 2006. Deena, 22 years old, was driving south on Highway 2 when a northbound car lost control on the slippery highway and crossed the median, striking Deena’s car almost head-on.
A passerby called 911 and Innisfail EMS personnel quickly arrived on scene. STARS was called to transport seriously injured Valina to Calgary, while her sister suffered only minor injuries. However, Deena was trapped in the vehicle and emergency personnel needed the Jaws of Life to cut her out.
It took about an hour to extricate Deena from the car and she was rushed by ground ambulance to Innisfail Hospital. STARS then transported both Deena and Valina to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
Physicians at Foothills determined Deena had numerous broken bones throughout her body, including her left foot, right ankle, right femur, right wrist, cheekbones and her nose. She also had a bruised lung and brain.
Over the next several days, Deena went through three separate surgeries to repair the broken bones. She remained in hospital in Calgary for 10 days before being transferred to Three Hills Hospital to be near her parents’ home. She remained in hospital for another six weeks, undergoing physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
In 2011, Deena enrolled at Red Deer College and will graduate in June 2012 from the Educational Assistant Program.
