A routine day at an Alberta ski hill in February, 2012 took a tragic turn when Jordan Fraser, 12, skidded across ice, launched into the air and fell to the ground. When he landed, his leg was twisted against his head. When the ski patrol found him they carried him down the hill on a spine board. After arriving at Red Deer Regional Hospital by ambulance, doctors determined he needed urgent care in a trauma unit so STARS was dispatched from Calgary to fly him to Alberta Children’s Hospital. “When doctors told us STARS was coming, we knew there was no time to waste,” said his mother, Sharlene. Jordan has recovered from his broken bones and collapsed lungs and even resumed skiing. His flight wasn’t the first time STARS flew a family member. In 1999 his grandmother, Myrna Cruickshank, was transported following a heart attack.
