STARS Air Ambulance is proud to be partnered with the University of Calgary to offer the STARS Critical Care and Transport Medicine Academy as a certificate course through the Continuing Medical Education Department.
STARS Critical Care and Transport Medicine Academy is a 20-week course that covers the fundamentals of critical care and transport medicine. This course is designed for rural and urban registered nurses, paramedics (ground and fixed-wing) and physicians who wish to expand their knowledge and skills when caring for the critically ill and/or injured patients.
The Academy is delivered using a blended model, comprised of a 16-week online component which allows practitioners to continue to work full time in their current practice setting and a 4 week in-class didactic portion which includes lectures from clinical specialists, high fidelity simulation and critical care skill labs. Participants learn how to identify, assess, diagnose and treat critically ill and/or injured patients both in their current practice setting and in the transport environment. Participants learn and perform advanced critical care skills that are essential for saving lives using the most current trends and treatment based on evidenced based research. The course is further augmented by having the learners take part in flight practicums at one of the STARS bases which solidifies their critical care knowledge and skills in the rotary wing transport environment.
