Rescue on the Island

08.21.2015 Foundation Fundraising

More than $175,000 was raised by seven community and business leaders yesterday during the third annual Rescue on the Island fundraising event for STARS air ambulance.

Participants were flown by helicopter to Carter Island in the Whiteshell Provincial Park near Pinawa, MB, where they competed against each other to raise the most funds in one day using their mobile phones and personal networks.

“Seeing what goes on behind the scenes with the STARS staff was just amazing,” said event participant Gene Fraser, vice president of MacDon Industries. “To participate in some of those medical challenges, and see what the critical care nurses, paramedics and doctors face out in the field gave us a unique perspective of this life saving program.”

Each was presented with a series of contests, including medical challenges, shelter building, a food tasting challenge, and a fundraising challenge.

Those involved included:

Chris Goertzen Mayor of Steinbach
Gene Fraser- Vice President MacDon Industries
Colin Penner - Farm Management Instructor
Jason Dubois - President Len Dubois Trucking Inc.
Rod Hill - Ex-Winnipeg Blue Bomber
Jessica Dumas - Chair, Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce
Nicole Chabot - Vice President of L. Chabot Enterprises Ltd.

“Thank you to all of the brave participants and everyone who pledged their support and donated to STARS,” said STARS Manitoba Vice President, Betty Lou Rock. “The donations will help STARS to continue responding to critically ill and injured patients in Manitoba.”

STARS has flown 372 emergency responses in Manitoba so far this year, with approximately half of calls being for medical emergencies, including heart attacks and strokes, and the remainder of calls for serious traumatic injuries.

STARS had a backup helicopter brought in for the event, while the active on-duty aircraft remained mission ready at the Winnipeg base.
