Leadership transition at STARS

04.04.2012 CEO Update Announcements

To the many STARS supporters:

The past year has been one of exciting developments at STARS. I’m writing to share with you some of the many activities and changes underway.

First, though, I’d like to thank you for your continued support. With your help, STARS is able to provide a safe, rapid, highly specialized emergency medical transport system for the critically ill and injured. We are grateful for your dedication and support of our mission.

As you know, STARS has served communities throughout Alberta and parts of eastern B.C. for 26 years. Now, STARS is moving into a new era: we are developing the STARS program in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan, working with the provincial governments and key partners to enhance access to critical care in these provinces. We are now operating in Manitoba and will be opening our first base in Saskatchewan in a few short weeks.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that I will be transitioning from CEO of STARS to the role of Founder. As part of this transition, Andrea Robertson has assumed the role of STARS President & CEO.

Andrea joined STARS last June as part of a planned succession. In this time, she has proven she has the passion and ability to lead STARS into our next era. She has my full support and the support of the STARS team.

With Andrea taking on the CEO’s responsibilities, I’m very excited to be moving into the next phase of my 26-year journey with STARS. As Founder, I will continue to be an ambassador for STARS and also continue to share my knowledge and experience with the STARS team and others in the field of air ambulance and emergency medicine.

More than 26 years ago, I worked closely with a dedicated group of volunteers to open the first STARS base. We were fortunate to have people who supported a dream of a specialized emergency medical transport system. One of my greatest privileges has been the chance to meet many former patients, volunteers, donors and supporters. By focusing on my role as Founder, I will have even more time and opportunities to meet with STARS supporters. I look forward to connecting with you in the near future at one of the always inspirational community events that have been so important to STARS over the years.

Once again, thank you for your continued support. Working together, we have helped many Canadians and their families, and will continue to do so. Your contributions have made a significant difference.

Dr. Greg Powell, O.C.
Founder, STARS and STARS Foundation
