Fraudulent STARS Lottery scam calls on the rise

07.22.2016 Lottery Public Service Announcement

Please be advised that a number of people in Alberta have received calls from someone identifying themselves as a STARS Lottery representative, claiming that they have won a prize and in order for it to be shipped to them, they must first transfer a certain amount of money through Western Union.

This is a scam. At no time will a representative from STARS request payment for delivery of a prize won in our lottery or otherwise. All lottery prize winners are notified in writing of what they won and how to claim their prize. At no time will money be requested in order to claim a prize.

In the event you receive such a call, please hang up, record the number calling, then advise your local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
