The 2014 STARS & Spurs Gala Presented by PSAC Celebrates 20th Anniversary and $1.1 Million Raised
January 27, 2014
Calgary, AB – January 27, 2014 - The Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC) today announced it has helped raise a total of more than $10 million for the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) over 20 years of presenting the annual STARS & Spurs Gala. This year’s gala raised a staggering $1.1 million, once again demonstrating the generosity of Canada’s oil and gas industry.
Over 1,200 guests attended the gala held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park. PSAC credits all sectors of the oil and gas industry for working together to make the gala such a long-term success. “It was another amazing year for our Gala, and the generosity of the attendees, sponsors and donours to the event is so inspiring,” said Mark Salkeld, president and CEO of PSAC. “Our event helps ensure that STARS’ emergency medical response services remain available to oilpatch workers, their families and communities across Western Canada.”
This year’s STARS and Spurs Gala presented by PSAC included a moving speech from STARS Very Important Patient for 2014, Sid Rothlisberger who told the crowd of his amazing story of survival after suffering life threatening injuries while out working on commissioning a well. Sid noted, “It is only because of STARS that I am standing here today, and that my beautiful wife has a husband and my two sons have a father. Words cannot express my gratitude.”
Gala guests also toasted the 2014 Honorary Patrons, Linda and Dr. Gregory Powell, and Doug Ramsay, all of whom were recognized for their incredible contributions to the success of PSAC, STARS and the Gala, and to the community at large.
Gala guests enjoyed dinner, a performance by Groove Academy, raffles, auctions, dancing and the chance to network, all with the help of guest emcee Dave Rutherford of 660 News.
"It has been 20 amazing years of support from PSAC's Board of Directors and members," said Andrea Robertson, President and CEO of STARS. "As a charitable organization, that annual fundraising commitment enables us to help save the lives of your neighbours, friends and family members. This legacy of support is a reflection of PSAC's commitment to the health and safety of our community."
“This partnership between PSAC and STARS has been well nurtured over the past 20 years,” said Mark Salkeld, president and CEO of PSAC. “The STARS & Spurs Gala presented by PSAC is a one-of-a-kind industry event and the money raised by our collective efforts is more important than ever.”
The Petroleum Services Association of Canada is the national trade association representing the service, supply and manufacturing sectors within the upstream petroleum industry. PSAC represents a diverse range of nearly 250 member companies, employing more than 70,000 people and contracting almost exclusively to oil and gas exploration and production companies.
