MPI and Emergency Services to Release Distracted Driving Video
August 29, 2017
Winnipeg, MB, Aug. 29, 2017 – Manitoba Public Insurance, STARS and other emergency services including RCMP, EMS and firefighters are partnering on Wednesday Aug. 30 to release a distracted driving safety video ahead of the Labour Day Long weekend in an effort to reduce serious injuries and deaths.
This video http://starshorizons.ca/distracted-driving/ will be posted via involved organizations’ social media platforms with the following representatives available for interviews at the STARS base (155 West Hangar Rd) at 1 p.m. on Aug. 30:
- Ward Keith, vice-president, Business Development & Communications, Chief Administrative Officer, Manitoba Public Insurance
- Insp. Ed Moreland, RCMP Officer in Charge of Traffic Services for the Province of Manitoba
- Lindsay Reimer, Superintendent - Emergency Medical Services, Southern Health-Santé Sud
- Asst. Chief Mike Penner and Lieutenant Trevor Schellenberg, Steinbach Fire Department
- Grant Therrien, STARS Base Director
“Distracted driving is a major cause of motor vehicle collisions in Manitoba,” said STARS Base Director and flight paramedic Grant Therrien. “Hopefully this video will be a strong reminder to motorists to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.”
The video was shot on May 16, 2017 in Steinbach where over 200 grade 10 students were bussed to the Southland Church parking lot to view a mock accident from a 911 call to a funeral post-event. This is the first time the video is being broadly released to the public.
United Driver Training initially requested STARS and other emergency services partner to produce this sponsor-funded initiative to demonstrate the consequences of distracted driving to local Steinbach and area teenagers. Sharing it before the long weekend is meant to remind drivers of all ages across the province to keep their eyes on the road and hands on wheel.
Broadcast quality video clips, with or without background music, are available to media upon request.
