Agassiz MLA joins Gladstone family for STARS tour and cheque presentation

October 19, 2016

Manitoba - The Bjarnarson family from Gladstone visited the Manitoba STARS air ambulance base in Winnipeg on Oct. 17, along with The Hon. Eileen Clarke, Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations and MLA for Agassiz. The Bjarnarson family’s three children visited the base to personally present STARS with a donation of $750.00 which they raised from the sale of their 4-H steers.

“On behalf of everyone at STARS we want to extend a very special thank you the entire Bjarnarson family for this very generous donation and for taking time to visit us in Winnipeg,” said Grant Therrien, a flight paramedic and STARS base director. “As a non-profit organization we rely on community donations to help save lives across rural Manitoba.”

Following the base tour, representatives of STARS along with the Bjarnson family joined Minister Clarke at the Manitoba Legislature where the Minister read a Members Statement in the Legislative Assembly acknowledging the Bjarnson family’s donation to STARS and the work STARS does in the Agassiz constituency and throughout Manitoba.

Last year STARS responded to 568 emergencies in Manitoba, including 34 missions to the Agassiz area. Of those responses 15 were motor vehicle collisions, 10 were serious medical emergencies, and 9 were a variety of traumatic injuries.

As a charitable organization, STARS receives government funding but relies on community support to fuel advances in critical care. These advances include carrying blood in the helicopter on every flight for life-saving blood transfusions, ongoing human patient simulator education for medical staff, and the use of night vision goggles for the pilots.
