Edmonton, AB - - STARS accepted a $150,000 grant under the Alberta Community Initiatives Program funded by the Alberta Lottery Fund this week at the STARS Edmonton base.

Under the grant application, a portion of the funds are directed towards pilot training on the new STARS advanced technology aircraft called the AW139 anticipated to be mission ready next year. The remaining funds have been directed toward the development of THE STARS CENTRE classroom facilities in the Edmonton base. The Centre provides critical care training for providers and partners in the emergency services community including physicians, paramedics and nurses in addition to STARS crew.

“This grant is greatly appreciated as it helps not only fund pilot training on flying the new aircraft but also with continuous development of critical care skills providing excellence in patient care,” says Dr. Greg Powell, President and CEO of STARS.

Doug Elniski, Edmonton-Calder MLA, toured the Edmonton STARS base before presenting the cheque for the grant to the STARS team.

“When you talk about the difference between life and death for people, you often talk STARS. The new equipment, the AW139, will greatly enhance the ability of this group to respond at those times when their help is needed most. It is money well invested,” Elniski said.

STARS (Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) is a non-profit, charitable organization providing airborne intensive care to critically ill and injured patients. Patient care and transport, emergency medical communications, education and research, and fundraising and community partnerships are the pillars of the STARS program.  Since it began in 1985, STARS has flown more than 17,200 missions.
