STARS staff and crew are excited to welcome the first of two new team members next year, the AgustaWestland 139 (AW139) helicopter.

Some frequently asked questions on the new AW139


What is an AW139?
The AgustaWestland - AW139 medium twin helicopter has two powerful P&W PT6C-67C engines and is the fastest helicopter in its class.

How far can it go?
The AW139 carries enough fuel to fly for three hours.  At 173 miles/hr, we are able to travel 500 Statute Miles as well as 25 per cent faster than the existing fleet of BK117s.

How many patients will it carry?
The AW139 can carry two critical patients with full life support equipment for each patient.

When will it be mission ready?
The first new AW139 is anticipated to be mission ready from Edmonton in 2011.

How big is the interior?

he cabin is eight cubic metres and is 1.42 metres high.
